Problem with old computer occurred – need to build a new one.
So my previous PC was around seven years old in March, but sadly it stopped working. Here’s what it looked like:
Build: Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Airflow
Power Supply: Corsair RMx Series RM750X 750W
Motherboard: MSI B350 Tomahawk
CPU: Ryzen 1700X
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16Gb (2x8gb)
GPU: Geforce RTX 3060 TI
Storage: Samsung 960 EVO M.2 250Gb
Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500Gb
Seagate Firecuda Gaming SSHD 1Tb
Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H110i
What I’m planning to keep from this system:
Build: Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Airflow
GPU: Geforce RTX 3060 TI
Looking at what I might buy:
CPU: Ryzen 7900X
Memory: Teamgroup 32Gb (2x16gb) DDR5
Do I need to replace the PSU? Is it sufficient or should I upgrade?
Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H110i
Can I reuse this cooling solution?
If yes, does it fit an AM5 chipset?
Next, NVMe:
I was considering 3 WD_BLACK 1TB SN850X NVMe drives.
But then I thought about formatting the old Samsung 960 EVO M.2 250Gb and using it as my C: drive instead.
I’m not a gamer much, but I mainly use it for development tasks—Visual Studio, SQL Server installation, Azure Dev Ops—and also for STL files and running Bambu Studio to slice STLs for printing.
Motherboard requirements:
It would need 3 M.2 slots. Since none of the NVMe drives meet the PCIe 5.0 standard and the GPU doesn’t, I’m unsure whether to go with B650 or X670.
PSU: Corsair RMx Series RM750X 750W
Is this power supply sufficient, or should I upgrade? A PSU from seven years ago won’t perform like it used to, so a replacement would be wise for the setup.
I’m curious about which component of my build failed—did you notice the system shutting down?
Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H110i
Can this cooling solution be adapted?
If yes, does it suit an AM5 chipset?
You’ll likely need a 360mm AIO when considering watercooling options. After seven years, I’m concerned the pump might fail or there could be air leaks in the loop due to permeation.

I also strongly suggest considering the 5700X3D or the 5800X3D rather than switching to a completely new platform. These CPUs perform well compared to the latest i5/i7 from Intel and even the 7900X for gaming purposes. Unless you require additional cores, I would avoid the multi-CCD chips for gaming. The 5950X remains useful if your workload involves many threads.
