I started my PC after returning from winter break, but I don’t have previous records of this problem. Most of my Microsoft programs aren’t functioning properly. The ones on the taskbar lack icons and launching them results in the error “explorer.exe – Class not registered.” I attempted to use the Windows Key + R shortcut to run apps like Settings, but it triggers a message saying the app can’t be started and suggests reinstalling it.

I followed these steps:
- Rebooted the system
- Applied a security patch
- Restored from a previous backup
- Restarted explorer.exe

I also tried accessing Task Manager, using Command Prompt, and checked external drives—plugging them in didn’t help. This seems like an unusual issue I’ve never encountered before, so I’m hoping someone can suggest alternative solutions before fully reinstalling Windows. Thank you in advance for any advice.

I started my computer once I got back home for winter break. This question helps me figure out if you brought your device with you from school or work, or if it was waiting there when you traveled. Since I don’t have details about the hardware, I can’t determine whether it’s a custom build or a pre-made model. Could you share more about the PC’s components? Thank you and good luck!

All good. The PC was at home, it's been at home and hasn't really ever endured any sort of transport. I didn't think the specs would be needed but that's kinda silly in retrospect now that you point it out. I built the PC, the boot drive is a 1 TB WD Blue, and it has a Samsung SSD (can't recall the exact model and capacity at this moment) for extra storage. Machine was built in 2020 with all brand new parts, so it's about 4 years old now. Ryzen 7 3700X, NVIDA 1660 Super, MSI X570-A Pro board.

Launch CMD without admin privileges and enter "wsreset" if needed. If that fails, run CMD as administrator and execute the following command: sfc /scannow dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

The outcome came back unsatisfactory... Initial steps encountered issues with ms-windows-store, indicating missing elements. Second attempt detected Windows Resource Protection with damaged files but couldn't resolve some. Online fixes are documented in the CBS log at windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline repairs, relevant details appear in the provided log file using the /OFFLOGFILE option. For instance, C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Absolutely, at that stage I’d stop trying to salvage it and just set up fresh components. Make sure you inspect your storage drives using CrystalDiskInfo to confirm there aren’t any issues with the failing drive.

I understand you're planning a fresh setup and want to ensure stability. To pinpoint the cause, you might need to check system logs, review recent changes, or test different components. Would you like guidance on troubleshooting steps?

I don’t understand much, I own storage devices that stayed in use for years without problems, and my laptop broke down after sitting on a shelf for six months.
