I recently got a mid 2009 Mackbook that has a small problem with the backlight. It would briefly turn on for a moment at startup and then stop. The display still works, but no backlight is visible. I performed an SMC reset which resolved the issue during one boot. Now the backlight stays on until the Apple logo appears while starting, after which it turns off.

Likely a faulty bulb or wire. Not worth repairing—it's seven years old. To fix it, consider replacing the cable and bulb.

You can locate cables for the screen backlight. The process isn't overly complicated, though you should proceed with caution... A hardware check might be useful, but I doubt it will make a difference. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
