Problem with launching Windows XP.
I'm dealing with bringing back my old Acer Travelmate 4201 to its original Windows XP Home setup. Windows 7 worked but it consumes most of the RAM when idle. I installed XP with all the drivers, now I just need to activate it—my laptop isn’t responding to that. I’m using the product key provided with the machine and keep encountering the error "Can't establish a connection with activation server" (Error 32777). Any suggestions? I’d prefer not to contact Microsoft about this issue.
Microsoft ceased backing XP, at least I think so. Even after calling them, you’d likely not receive guidance on next steps.
It seems the activation servers are no longer active because they stopped supporting XP, at least according to what I understand.
Phone activation should remain functional. Although they don’t support XP, it’s likely they should still enable it. The activation process is automated, so no need to contact anyone unless necessary. If activation doesn’t work, you may need to reach out to a service representative.
POSReady remains available through early 2019, though its relevance for activation is unclear.
I'll attempt that now. Probably the last option available. Yeah, I made that registry adjustment but it didn't help much.
This occurs because XP is bundled with IE6 and depends on the browser for activation. IE6 is no longer supported. You can't access websites with this browser, even Microsoft sites. Set Windows to automatically install updates and wait a while (or click the yellow shield in notifications once XP downloads so you can install it manually). After the initial updates, IE will upgrade to version 8 and should connect to the servers. I activated two XP installations today, so the servers are likely operational. Given the speed of these installs and using the same OEM key on both devices, it seems the system doesn’t verify the key anymore. It might assume it’s an XP install and automatically confirm it. When reinstalling XP on that netbook BITD, I had to manually enter the phone number each time. This was necessary for the original hardware, but it should now trigger correctly with the new hardware IDs from my virtual machines.
