I possess an older HP Elitebook 8470p (CNU31396YC) that I bought for a low price. I attempted to replace the HDD with a SSD by cloning it using Macrium Reflect onto a 500GB Samsung 870 EVO drive, but the system won’t start. From what I found online, HP supports larger HDDs for this model, though the SATA interface might be limited to 256GB. I’ve updated the BIOS and drivers, and re-cloned the disk—still no success. The machine is running Windows 10 Pro. Any advice? Or is this just a quirk of the original hardware? Might I need to spend another $50 on a smaller SSD?

The system appears to have a valid boot sector, especially since it's using legacy mode without UEFI.

It’s fully cloned with all three sections stored on the HDD. The system notes a potential cable issue and that the disk isn’t detected, though a drive check will still run. I’ve used Macrium several times before switching from HDD to SSD without any trouble. If it matters, I’d just replace the SSD, but this seems more like a minor project since it’s only a third-gen i5.

HP specifications indicate compatibility with SATA 3.0 from the chipset, SATA 1.0 for optical drives, and SATA 2.0 for certain drives. Reports from different laptop models suggest using SATA 2.0 instead of SATA 3.0 for specific devices. A workaround found online allows the Samsung 860 QVO SSD to function on the same system, which may resolve your issue.

It looks like the provided link isn't functioning. I've also tested it using a 250GB Crucial MX500, but the issue persists.

Tried setting up from a Windows 10 installation drive and everything seemed to work with the 500GB Samsung SSD. It looks like the problem was with the HP software I transferred over—interesting since the 320GB HDD is still functioning properly. The new drive only uses 21GB, which is a big improvement compared to the previous 170GB. Not sure what else was included, but it’s gone now.
