I recently constructed an external housing for eight HDD bays with a PCIe 8-port SATA setup, resembling a NAS but internally linked to my desktop. I installed some NAS drives and occasionally encounter the error "K:\ is not accessible. A device which does not exist was specified." This occurs unpredictably, forcing me to use EaseUS Partition Master for fixes. Does this relate to adding NAS drives on my desktop? Could it be connected through the PCIe to SATA card? Might the presence of too many drives on Windows be the issue? The drives I have are Toshiba N300 4TB, WD RED Plus 4TB and Seagate Ironwolf 4TB. Operating system is Windows 11, x570 MB.

I'm figuring out how to transfer data from the desktop to the enclosure. It might involve SATA or PCIe, but it could be something else entirely. The issue might depend on the specific card you're using—cheap ones often perform poorly. I've worked with at least eight drives on Windows before.

Thank you for your response. I received a more affordable option from Amazon. I also have three internal drives. I installed a PCIe card with an 8-port SATA connection, used SATA cables up to one meter long, and added power extensions to link to the PSU.

I think the SATA card might be the problem, but the 1m cables likely aren’t contributing much. At the very least, consider moving to an LSI HBA like the 9207-8i or 9300-8i. This would rule out the cable issue and give you higher-quality PHYs for handling longer runs of cable. You’ll also need some SAS-to-SATA adapters, though they’re not too costly.

Successful! Appreciate the info. Have the LSI 9300-8E.

I noticed the changes you made yesterday and remembered the discussion about improving it.
