The laptop lost internet connection unexpectedly while others on the same network stayed connected. It works perfectly on guest Wi-Fi even though it's likely using the same access point. Previous troubleshooting steps like CMD commands and network settings didn’t resolve the issue, and removing it from the saved list didn’t help either. Consider checking physical connections, signal strength, or contacting your ISP for further assistance.

Consider accessing the device manager. Find the Wi-Fi card. Remove the driver by marking it for deletion. Afterward, restart your computer. Make sure to enter the right password.

I'm not there yet, so I can't confirm if it worked. Will Windows reinstall the right driver after restarting? Edit: I believe I have the correct password; otherwise it wouldn't allow me to connect. The laptop joins the network, but I don't have internet access or see our NAS, etc. Updated September 13, 2023 by DreamCat04

Will you still get WiFi once you remove the Wi-Fi adapter from the device manager? You have an Ethernet cable available, though it's not in your current location.

on this network you receive which IP address depends on the configuration. if the number is 169, it’s likely a DHCP issue, especially if the guest network isn’t working properly. the most frequent fix is expanding the DHCP scope on the router for your private area. this is usually the main cause of problems with private routers. DHCP ranges are often very small—just 10 to 15 IP addresses. if adding smart home devices disrupts the connection, it’s quite normal. a lease typically lasts about a day. you can inspect the router settings, but if another device connected before your laptop booted up, it might have taken the IP and caused this issue. common connected items include smart TVs, game consoles, mobile phones, home security systems, cameras, door bells, and smart light bulbs or fridges.

It's a 192.168 network with 255 usable hosts, leaving plenty of IP addresses available. There are many free IPs accessible, which is why we can test wake-on-LAN easily. We also don’t have a large number of connected devices.

there is one main address for all internal IPs. you have 192 addresses, but only a few are used internally. the internet operates through a separate guest network. you may have turned off and on the router or reset it to factory settings. remember to change the password and configure the guest network if needed.

He seems to have just rebooted the access point, not the router. I’ll let him do that again when he’s away.
