Hello, I just installed Fallout 4 for PC and am facing some freezing issues. The game freezes briefly at the start—sometimes for a few seconds, then it resumes for a short time (about 25% of the time). It seems to work intermittently, especially when the keyboard and mouse aren’t responding. I’ve updated my NVIDIA drivers and downloaded the game recently, so I assume updates are available. My system runs an i5-3570K with GTX980, and the game suggests Ultra settings. I tried adjusting the settings but couldn’t make it stable. It occasionally ran for a couple of minutes before stopping again. Any suggestions or fixes would be appreciated. Thanks!

1080p Also, there was an update. Reducing the settings significantly extended playtime before it crashed. It seems thermal problems might be the cause, though temperatures looked normal via afterburner. If thermals were the issue, the frame rate wouldn't drop instantly from 55-60 to zero, but I'm not sure.

I don't believe it's still Fallout. I was just watching a TV show on iTunes and the same thing occurred.

Suggest checking your rams. However, it might also be a shaky OC.

Completed a stress test on all items I wanted to verify, nothing went wrong... I’m still a bit puzzled.

No, not all drivers are current.

I've spoken with most drivers I know. I experimented with something that might have helped or could just be a coincidence. My monitor has a toggle for DisplayPort 1.2, which was enabled. I turned it off and switched back to ultra settings; Fallout ran smoothly for about 15 minutes without any issues (I had to go to work). It doesn't seem like the monitor setting would matter since my card supports DP1.2. Apart from that, I didn't make any other changes during that test. Could it be that my drive is failing and the problems appear randomly? EDIT: later I confirmed the S.M.A.R.T. reports were all normal for all three drives. Updated August 10, 2016 by pdubs

I don't rely on S.M.A.R.T. It's just a diagnostic aid, not a final verdict. The three latest drives I've used failed before meeting S.M.A.R.T criteria, but tests showed disappointing random read and write rates that led to severe boot delays and app launches. Interestingly, games weren't too impacted. Recently, I noticed some odd memory behavior. My overclock stays steady, yet Windows sometimes thinks it's not stable enough and caps me at 3GB. If everything stayed consistent otherwise, entering a game would still cause stuttering. Paging file access. Reboot, it detects memory correctly at the same rate and functions perfectly. Which setting did you adjust, and were there any restarts between your sluggish phase, the change, and then improved performance?

I'll review the drive speeds this evening. No loading speed problems have appeared. I thought about a RAM issue before, but tests showed everything normal. Between failed and successful checks, I reset Fallout 4's graphics settings to the recommended level and adjusted the "DP 1.2" setting on my monitor using the buttons. I don't recall a reboot happening. It might have been off when I changed the monitor setting, though I'm not certain.
