Problem with Ethernet connection
Problem with Ethernet connection
Hi, I recently installed a new PC and encountered an issue with LAN connectivity while WiFi remained functional. The system indicates the LAN cable isn't connected properly, even though it worked before. Device Manager shows the LAN controller is operational, and I've updated drivers via the official site and Armoury Crate. BIOS was also updated, and the controller activation in settings matched. The LED lights only turn on when the PC is powered off, shutting off immediately upon startup. ASUS support suggested returning the motherboard, which I did. After replacing it, the same problem persists. Motherboard model: ASUS TUF GAMING B650-E, Windows 10.
With a 2.5G LAN connection, certain network devices may not function properly. Adjusting them to 1G full-duplex could resolve the issue.
Use a flashlight to inspect the RJ-45 port on the motherboard. Verify that all connectors are aligned properly and aren’t making contact with other components. Test with a different cable if needed—it can make a big difference. Good luck!
I checked my cable with the laptop and everything functioned properly. The port on my board looked good too. LAN was already configured for 1GB full duplex, but I set it to 100 mbit/s and it still didn’t work. I booted Linux Mint Live on a USB stick and in the connections section it showed no cable connected. There was another Linux Mint installation before I returned the first one, but the same problem occurred. The LEDs appear to light up in BIOS until startup, then they shut off. One is orange and the other blinks green randomly. In Event Viewer, my LAN Controller reported an error: "Device PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8125&SUBSYS_87D71043&REV_05... had a problem starting." Hope this helps.
The only similarity between Windows and Linux is the BIOS. You might start by clearing the CMOS memory, but updating the BIOS is likely a better approach (then reset the CMOS). If the newest version doesn’t work with your Ethernet port, consider using an older BIOS version. Also, check for hardware issues with the Ethernet port—installing a PCIe card or USB dongle could help. Good luck!
