Problem with auto-scroll and auto-zoom?
Hi all, I’m trying to figure out what’s going on....
I’m using
Windows 10 Pro 22H2 on a desktop PC and noticing these issues:
Symptoms:
Auto-scrolling down in Device Manager, Screenpresso, Windows Settings app, File Explorer (only L-side bar visible)
Auto-slow zoom in the Photos app (just when hovering over images and the app is open)
It starts right away when I hover the mouse and keeps going even after I turn off or unplug the mouse and keyboard
What’s unusual:
It doesn’t occur in Chrome, Evernote, or PureRef
It seems to be limited to certain apps
I’ve already tried:
Turning off mouse and keyboard (while scrolling or zooming)
Unplugging a Wacom tablet
Disabling scroll inactive windows while hovering
Turning off Magnifier and all Ease of Access options
Extra hint:
Manually dragging the scrollbar doesn’t work — it just shifts slightly before stopping
It feels like Windows is stuck in a gesture, smooth scrolling, or inertia mode that some apps respect and others ignore.
Anyone has advice on how to fix this?
Update your post with complete hardware details and operating system information. Provide the power supply specifications, including voltage, wattage, age, and condition (original, build, refurbished, used). List all connected peripherals. Indicate whether the network connection is wired or wireless. Note that a file may be buggy or corrupted; consider using built-in Windows troubleshooters such as 'dism' and 'sfc /scannow' to resolve issues.
when this occurred with me, it turned out to be my Xbox controller. it even prevented the monitor from sleeping because it kept receiving signals to stay active. removing it and all the unusual scrolling stopped. it was similar to what you mentioned—mainly in settings apps and other system-related areas. There were no problems with other programs, browsers, or anything else. It was just settings and a few windows menus I opened.
You mentioned unplugging an input tablet. Could you try plugging one in as well? It might not be the same issue, but it seems like the problem in my case was related to having a controller connected when similar symptoms appeared.
Hey there, thanks a lot.
I basically unplugged all my USBs, then brought back just the mouse to check if the issue was fixed and it worked perfectly.
After that, I tried plugging them back one by one.
And guess what? All of them are fine now.
It looks like switching them on and off causes the setup device to show up and resolve the problem.
Without your suggestion I wouldn’t have tried this, so again thank you so much!
it's great that it's helping, seeing more of these kinds of problems lately is good. knowing I'm not the only one is reassuring. i didn't try reinstalling the controller after checking it, since it was likely around ten years old, so i just swapped it out. lol but i'll definitely add what worked to the answer if it comes up again on the forum.
