Problem with Asus X58 Rampage 3 Extreme Windows 10 installation
I just rebuilt my PC and changed the motherboard from a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 to an Asus Rampage 3 Extreme. I already had an SSD installation (OCZ Vertex 460) and it was fine until I started using the Rampage. It worked at first but then restarted because of high IOH temperature, followed by an instant blue screen on boot. When I put the SSD in my laptop, it functioned properly. After resetting Windows on my laptop, it worked the first time, but after a restart the issue returned. During a clean install, it failed past the post and kept hanging at the pre-boot console.
I don't know what BSOD error I get, there is no display to give an error code. only checklight, that all turnoff (that means everything is working) because the Sata3 controller is the Marvell 9128 (the shittiest Sata3 controller ever, to can set it to AHCI and it stays on IDE) I have an PCI-E sata3 controller for my SSD. HPET is to 64Bit aswell (I should've mentioned these, sorry)
Well... it's mainly because motherboard makers were preoccupied with the "SATA-3" option instead of genuinely adding SATA-3 support. This meant nearly every X58 board came with the same low-quality controller and was connected to PCI-E 2x rather than the faster 4x, leaving it lacking in bandwidth. Yes, I understand—I own a working X58 system still. But I switch to SATA-2 for my SSD; it performs better and is more reliable than the included controller. I don’t focus on peak speeds; I prioritize quick access to small files, which is what I use most of the time—running programs and operating systems.
Absolutely, same. Even when starting up (just a few times), it felt slow and laggy. That’s why I use the external SATA controller. But it still doesn’t solve the problem with booting a bootable USB, which is the biggest concern right now.
From my perspective, to enable USB Boot I need: Verify USB Storage is activated in BIOS (same area as USB Keyboard and Mouse support) Ensure USB booting is set to "USB-HDD" Then press the boot menu key while the USB drive is active, selecting "USB-HDD Worked" for both USB 2.0 and 3.0 (if USB 3.0 is enabled)
Have you experimented with only SATA 2? The Marvell controllers performed poorly, as you mentioned. Still, I was able to run two SSDs, a 1TB HDD, and a 2TB HDD using SATA 2 on my ASUS Rampage III Formula (just one level below your setup) for quite some time until my RAM failed.
I used a different Sata3 controller with my Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7. It functioned perfectly alongside the OS, motherboard, and SSD. I experienced some problems before resolving them by adjusting BIOS settings. Eventually, switching the stick from Channel A to Channel B fixed everything (especially memory-related issues).
Today I powered on the PC with Asus RC Bluetooth. It started fine—CPU and memory both OK, though the cold start was unusual on this board. VGA BIOS and CMOS error were reported. No display appeared. I tried resetting via the RC Bluetooth, but it didn’t work. I reset using the back button and removed the CMOS battery, but nothing changed. I changed the BIOS settings and tried the second one, still no success. It seems the board may have failed this morning. I’ve already received my refund for the board, so I’m considering it a waste of time. I already have an agreement with Evga X58 Classified SLI and heard good things about it. Thanks for all the help from the community!
