Problem with 5820k overclock and 7-zip
My new i7-5820k works smoothly with aida64 stress test ad-nauseum at 4.5ghz OC and 1.250Vcore, but it fails with aida64 7-zip benchmark at any speed other than stock rates. Running 7-zip even with slight overclocking causes the screen to go black and prompts error messages about CPU settings. I have an MSI X99A SLI plus with 16GB RAM, using Corsair DDR4 2666, and changing the memory to 2133 doesn't fix the problem. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I noticed that aida64's 7-zip test increased significantly when using the MSI Intel Extreme Overclocking tool to adjust clock rates and memory settings. If I configured the overclocking in BIOS without relying on the MSI/Intel utility, aida64/7-zip works properly—especially at around 4.0ghz.
I believe 7-zip puts more strain on your CPU depending on the configuration, causing instability. You might want to lower the clock speed or adjust settings for better stability.
Return to the default/XMP setup, test 7-zip, and consider using it alongside Prime95 as a stress test. Then fine-tune for stability.
I'd suggest that 7-zip places more stress on your CPU, causing instability depending on your configuration. You might need to lower the clock speed slightly or adjust settings for better stability.
Return to the default/XMP setup, execute 7-zip, then test it under worst-case conditions (possibly with Prime95). Adjust until you achieve stability.
Neither XMP profile 1 nor profile 2 functions well with 7-zip. Reducing the RAM speed from 2666mhz to 2133mhz also doesn't help.
My i7-5820k is running the aida64 stress test at 4.5ghz with a 1.25v boost. It won't complete 7-zip at 4.0ghz with that setting, nor at 3.6ghz across all cores. However, it does finish the test at the standard clock speeds.
At this stage, I'm reinstalling Windows (which had become unreliable due to numerous overclocked BSODs) to check if this improves things.
