I chose to bring back my 2008 iMac and replace the faulty hard drive. After setup, I still see a white screen with "? file folder." I've tested all possible key combinations to access Disk Utility for formatting, but it doesn't work. Using the OS disk that came with it also fails—it plays like it's being read, then restarts after minutes. The cursor appears when I press "C," but that's all. I'm unsure what to do next. No other Macs in the house, but a Windows PC running Windows 8 is working. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Did you just press the 'option' key to restart? Your 2005 MacBook accepts that, letting you pick the CD drive. The delay feels odd at times.
