I've been attempting to reach my FileZilla server from another network, and while the standard connection worked initially, loading files has stopped. I discovered a solution on Stack Overflow using SFTP, but I'm now facing difficulties connecting to the FTP server again. Any suggestions on what to try next? Thanks in advance.

Is this connected to the wider Internet or another network that needs a path back to your FTP server's location? If it uses the public Internet, your data is likely being blocked by your firewall. Accessing FTP over the public Internet is risky and not recommended; consider using a VPN such as Wireguard instead.

It's being tested over the internet, but for security reasons I'm attempting to use SSH (SFTP). I added a rule in my Windows firewall allowing FileZilla and its port, which worked with FTP before, but now SFTP connections aren't connecting properly.

Networking FTP employs "Passive mode," requiring additional ports beyond 21 for actual data transfers, ensuring they align with your server's configuration.

I considered attempting this myself, though no one had discussed it in tutorials or chats before. I’ll attempt to open some ports and see if the connection works again.

There was a small delay in showing the connection I attempted on my server console.

I checked the ports but the issue persists. It seems like a configuration mistake might be the cause. Let me help you troubleshoot.

Check if your PC is linked to the internet directly. If not, see if you're redirecting traffic through the router. Avoid using FTP; SSH is preferable because it uses one port and traffic is secure.

I set up the port forwarding on your PC, but SSH isn’t connecting properly. It’s unclear where the issue lies.

Most problems people face with port forwarding stem from several NAT layers or misconfigurations. Multiple NAT setups often happen when you link several routers together in a sequence or when your ISP relies on NAT due to limited IP addresses. To identify the issue, examine your ISP's NAT by checking your WAN IP and confirming it matches the range typical for Carrier Grade NAT.
