Problem: Smoke coming out of my computer.
Problem: Smoke coming out of my computer.
Hey everyone, I'm a new PC builder. I've tried building before but messed up this time and don't know what to do next. Basically, my fans didn't work when I plugged them into the motherboard. So I looked online and found that for my Phantek case, the fan control needs to be connected to the power supply too. That's what I did, and now all my fans started spinning right away. Oh no, the wire connecting the fan control was smoking and burning up! Some of the cable coating got stuck on the CPU fans and ended up outside the back of my case. So, what should I do? Is it okay to plug in my PC again without that wire attached? Should I remove the fan control and just use a fan splitter instead? Anything else is good advice because I'm too new at this? I've attached some pictures for you to see. Help me out, thanks! Here are my setup details: Case: Phantek P600S Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix 870e-e Processor: Ryzen 7 9800x3D SSD: Samsung 990 Pro PCI 4.0 4TB RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB RGB DDR5 6000MHz GPU: MSI RTX 5080 Shadow PSU: MSI MAG A1000GS
I noticed that you have a 3-pin DC fan plugged into the white fan header on your hub. What fan is actually connected there? I would have connected the hub directly to the CPU_OPT header instead of CHA_FAN5. Regarding the wiring: according to the Phanteks manual page 14, the pin wire goes straight to the motherboard while the other end connects to the PSU. So it seems like you wired it correctly, but because the insulation melted off, it suggests that maybe one part was reversed or the harness from the factory had a mistake. The third picture in your original post shows if the wire went to the hub or was bent before installation? I'll contact Phanteks support to ask what they think. If you don't see any signs of burning or damage on the PWM hub, maybe you should get a new harness or wire from them for the hub.
Okay. I'll fix that. Thank you! This is actually my second build with this case, so it seems more likely that the mistake was on my end rather than the factory's. I don't remember if it's easy to force the wire onto the motherboard the wrong way though. I'll check when I get home. For the third pic: it was bent from the get go. Good advice. I will do that. Thank you
