Problem resolved: Black screen after installing Windows 2070.
I own an ASUS ROG STRIX Z270-I gaming rig equipped with a 7700K and a 2070. I have three 1TB SSDs installed, but I’m currently using only one. Whenever I upgrade to try and install the drivers after updating to version 1809, the system crashes. This issue affects all three SSDs inside the PC. I even removed a M.2 slot in hopes it would resolve the problem. After launching Windows from my Windows 10 USB drive, I installed the WiFi drivers and began updating. Once the updates completed after about an hour, the PC restarted and remained open for less than five minutes. During that time I attempted to install the Nvidia driver for the 2070, but the screen went black. After shutting it down and restarting, I accessed the Windows boot recovery. It displayed one of two options: roll back (which I did) or it indicated the C drive was missing and repair was impossible. I’ve tried troubleshooting multiple times over a 24-hour span, but nothing works. I recently downloaded the latest BIOS, swapped out the SSDs for different models, and installed them all, yet the problem persists. This PC has been idle for roughly two years since it was intended for VR use, and I hadn’t had a GPU until now. It functioned normally before the GPU was added; after an update, it simply crashed. I’m unsure what to do next. Should I remove the GPU or am I stuck? If anyone has advice or experience, it would be incredibly helpful. *UPDATE* Removing the GPU resolved the issue completely. The open-box condition and a damaged VRM on the PCB were previously suspected causes for the crashes.
