Hey there! I'm reaching out because I've previously built several PCs and now face an issue I've never dealt with before. After getting a refurbished RTX 3090 and swapping out my motherboard, my system keeps overheating under heavy usage. At first, I assumed it was normal since I had a decent budget cooler, so I upgraded to a new Noctua NH-U12A. But temperatures stayed high. I've tried numerous fixes: scanning for malware, cleaning the PC, using MSI Afterburner, applying thermal paste, ensuring a cool room, updating drivers, and more. The only partial relief was removing the glass panel, which slightly lowered temps by 3-5 degrees, and capping my FPS at 60. Still, I can't reach 144fps on a 144Hz monitor like I used to with my old 1060. When I load demanding games, it spikes to 80-84°C and causes crashes. This is concerning because outside gaming I'm working on Unreal Engine, and I'm worried about crashes, damage, or losing progress. If anyone has insights or solutions, I'd really appreciate any help. Temperatures between 80 and 84 degrees are normal and shouldn't cause issues. It's unlikely to be a thermal throttle either. Your RAM configuration—two 16GB and two 8GB—might be unusual.
You should be fine at those temperatures. The problem is more likely with your GPU. Have you installed the latest Nvidia drivers? You might want to use Display Driver Uninstaller and install the newest GeForce driver for the 3090 from Nvidia’s site, not through GeForce Experience. How are your GPU temperatures? Do you have a way to check the power consumption? The 30-series is known for big power spikes when under stress, which can cause crashes.
I took out the RAM despite not having issues before; I suspected something was off and swapped in the new 8GB sticks, but the problem continued. My GPU drivers are current, updated from Nvidia’s site just days ago. I can’t measure power usage since it hasn’t been needed before. How should I test this effectively? Usually I only experience crashes in The Elder Scrolls Online, but when I run other games like DOOM Eternal, the CPU overheats and can’t cool down afterward—even without a crash. This appears to be related to airflow issues and a hot graphics card. Didn't mention GPU temperatures. How is your case's airflow configured? Which fans are there, where are they located, and what speeds are they spinning at? It could help to check the system using hwinfo while you play and share a screen of CPU and GPU data after 10-15 minutes if it stays consistent.
