Recently acquired an i7 9700-k to replace my i5 7400. While installing, I bumped the underside against the case. After checking under the lights, everything seemed intact. I proceeded with the setup and powered on the PSU. The motherboard lights up normally, so I attempted to boot using the panel power button, but it didn’t work. No fans started at all. I verified all connections and proper CPU placement. Still, nothing happened. I then swapped the old CPU and it booted fine. I updated the BIOS on my Asus (z270-p) motherboard as recommended. After updating, I tried again—CPU in place, everything connected, identical to before. Still no change. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!
You cannot combine a 9700K and a 7400 on the same motherboard. Chipset compatibility isn't possible. The 100 and 200 series chipsets (Z170, Z270, B250, etc.) are restricted to 6th and 7th generation chips (7700, 6400, 6600K, etc.). The 300 series (Z370, Z390, B365, B360, etc.) is needed for 8th and 9th generation CPUs (8700, 9700, 9900K, 8400F, etc.). The top CPU available is an i7-7700K and similar, but used prices are quite high, making it impractical.
This advice is only for those who enjoy working with hardware and exploring creative setups.
Absolutely, that wouldn't fit here because it was designed for the 8th generation, not the 9th.
