Problem: Games are frequently freezing and returning to the computer's main screen.
I'm experiencing a problem where games frequently crash unexpectedly, and this isn’t tied to specific titles; it occurs without any prior indication or error notifications. I’ve attempted reinstalling Windows, monitored the system with Task Manager during these crashes, and observed only a significant spike in hard drive activity reaching 100% followed by a return to normal. I upgraded my graphics card from a 660ti but this didn't resolve the issue. My computer doesn’t generally crash; it’s solely within games. When a game fails, it simply terminates, and all other applications continue to function correctly. Could this be related to DirectX? I primarily play 3D games, and I’m unsure if this occurs with non-3D titles. Furthermore, my GPU and CPU temperatures remain normal during these crashes. My system specifications are as follows: Intel i5 8600k, Z370 PC Pro motherboard, Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz C16, EVGA 750 GQ power supply, and a ROG-Strix-RX580-T8G-gaming graphics card.
I consistently encounter this problem with my RX 580s when attempting to utilize DirectX 12. Specifically, in 3D Mark, I’m able to complete all benchmarks using DX11 without any problems. However, switching to DX12 results in crashes occurring approximately 15 seconds into each benchmark. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows 10 on a new motherboard (with its BIOS updated) featuring two RX 580 GTS Black Edition 8GB graphics cards and the most recent/compatible drivers. Furthermore, games like Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 5 perform exceptionally poorly with DX12 enabled. For instance, Battlefield 1 would frequently fail to progress beyond the main menu before crashing once I activated DX12; I ultimately needed to remove my local settings profile to launch the game without DX12 active by default. If you experience a similar issue related to DX12, I’d appreciate hearing about any solutions you may discover.
