I connected a printer to my network on Windows 11 and disabled password protection in the advanced sharing options. On the other machine (also Windows 11), I attempted to add the printer using the format \\computername\printer_name and received a password prompt. Even when entering admin credentials from the host PC, it didn't function. Note: My WiFi access point is relatively new for what I consider my "WiFi" printer. Additionally, a scanner is required to meet my personal needs, not just the manufacturer's specifications. Edited August 22, 2023 by slickmann1

Hi slickmann1, Are you sure the host PC's network connection is configured as a private network? It should be set to private. From the host PC, when you navigate to printer settings, then security, click the "add" button, enter "everyone" in the box, confirm by clicking "check names," and finally click "OK." After that, try printing from the other PC.

Also, check if you've enabled "Network Discovery" and "File and Printer Sharing" under the Advanced Sharing Options.

The only action I didn’t take was enabling network privacy. Once I did that and restarted the machine, the issue persisted. I’m open to having the printer protected with a username and password I personally recognize, though it would differ from the shared folder access which shouldn’t exist.

Networking via Windows Explorer isn't displaying the printer, while accessing the network on another machine doesn't show the host PC, even though connecting to \\host-pc does reveal the printer.

I can't display the local IP addresses directly, but I can help you retrieve them using commands. You can run `ipconfig` or `ifconfig` on each PC to see its IP. To ping from a client, use `ping <hostname>` in the command prompt.

Quick personal note: setting up a local account with a password is simpler and quicker. If you don’t need to type it at startup, enable autologon—just be careful. Avoid sharing resources that interfere with password protection. Save time by skipping the password expiration step for that user.

The second PC (laptop) wasn't configured with a private WiFi network initially. After changing it, the password disappeared but the printer remained restricted to print-only mode without a scanner. Access to the scanner is essential. Recommendations needed? Printer model Canon Pixma MG2922 has an IP menu that lacks a "scan PDF to folder" feature.

Does the printer support Wi-Fi? I’d need to revisit the steps for connecting the scanner in a shared space, as it’s been a while since we last checked.
