I'm almost done with my project. Right now I'm considering an operating system for it. This build needs to support gaming, media storage, streaming in a cozy home setting, smart home features, and possibly security and monitoring. I strongly dislike Windows and its restrictive nature. That's why I'm thinking Linux. The challenge is two parts: first, I'm not a programmer and don't have much tech knowledge. Second, I'm struggling to compare different distributions and find reliable examples. I'm trying to match the Android experience on my smart devices with something similar on a desktop. Need some guidance... :-)

Chrome OS isn't functioning properly and won't support your needs. Stick with Windows instead.

Windows stands out as the top choice for gaming among operating systems. Support on OSX is limited, and Linux receives even less backing. You might need to use tools like Wine to get started, though reliability remains uncertain. Linux does come with a steep learning curve, especially due to the vast number of distributions available. For those interested in Linux, a dual-boot setup is recommended—use Windows for gaming and experiment with Linux distributions on a flash drive.

Google remains connected to Microsoft in the same framework, and they still control us—my status isn’t any longer 'for sale'.

You can easily obtain an x86 implementation of real Android. That should be the best you can achieve. http://www.android-x86.org/

Try playing GTA V on a non-Windows operating system. If you prefer something other than Windows, consider alternatives like W7 which avoids many of the issues found in W10.

I’m likely to keep using Windows. I’m just exploring Linux alternatives.

You might use one machine solely for gaming and another for everyday tasks, avoiding any particular operating system.
