I was trying to configure a setup for several desktops on Windows 8, but it warned me that some hotkeys were already taken—like Windows plus any key. I wanted to check what they actually did. To my amazement, using the Windows button with a number brought up a program in the taskbar, showing its position (I also tried numpad keys, which didn’t help). While I was there, here are some handy shortcuts I know: Press Control + Click for multiple selections, Shift + Click to pick all files between points, Control + A selects everything, Control + Tab switches tabs, Control + Esc opens the start menu. For gaming, you can disable the Windows button and use WinKey + W for search (works in Windows 8). Other basics: WinKey + L locks the PC, Control + C copies, Control + V pastes, Control + X cuts, Alt + Tab switches open windows, and Control + V flips tabs. On Windows 8 it doesn’t work the same as on previous versions.

Control + Shit + Esc = Launch task manager Win + R = Run prompt Win + D = displays desktop, press again to return all windows. Control + Alt + End = sends Ctrl+Alt+Del to a remote host via remote desktop. Alt + Tab navigates between open windows, but pressing Alt + Shift + Tab moves backward through them (same for Firefox tabs—hold Shift to reverse). Win + X (Windows 8+8.1) right-clicks the Start button. Win + C (8/8.1) opens the charms menu (which shows the clock, useful if you need it). Win + S (8/8.1) lets you search from any location (same as pressing Win then searching). Win + E opens an explorer window. Not every app supports it, but many do—especially when copying and pasting while matching the destination source, handy for keeping font or size consistent in emails you send.
