Preparing to share a computer with a friend
In a short while I’ll be sharing my PC with a friend. I have two choices: either upgrade my existing server setup or invest more and get him a newer system featuring the H310M board I own. Here are the two options I’m considering. The components I already have stand out. Option 1: Intel Core i5-4670K (4.5GHz stable @ 1.25V) Asus Z87 Plus Cryorig M9 Plus / generic Asetek 120mm AIO 2x GSkill 8GB DDR3-1600 Asus RX580 Dual 8GB Tecware VXR Intel S3610 SSD EVGA GD550 80+ Gold PSU Option 2: Intel Core i5-9400F Asrock H310M G/M.2 Cryorig M9 Plus / generic Asetek 120mm AIO 2x Adata 8GB DDR4-2666 Asus RX580 Dual 8GB Tecware VXR Intel S3610 SSD EVGA GD550 80+ Gold PSU I’m a bit worried about the performance of the 4670K since it’s only a 4-core, 4-thread model (the thread count is a bit low for current standards). Still, I’d prefer to keep the H310 board for an mATX HTPC or Minecraft server build.
4c/4t remains acceptable for most purposes, though it may not retain value much longer. Most games run efficiently on a single thread, so the GPU shouldn’t cause any issues. I recommend the Haswell platform because it’s more affordable and pairs well with the H310 motherboard.
