Hey there! I just bought a Blu-ray optical drive, but it doesn’t include Blu-ray playback software. Any suggestions on what you can use? I’m not sure if VLC supports Blu-ray, and the only other one I know is PowerDVD—ugh, please no more of that. I’d love a free option, but if not, something affordable (under £15-20) would be great. Thanks!

I haven't come across anything VLC that can't be read. It seems there might not be a better option available.

I believe MakeMKV is the top choice. It converts the Blu-Ray into multiple .mkv files. The main video is ready to play with VLC, JetAudio and many other applications. You can save the ripped discs on your PC and avoid the hassle of damaging the disc or enduring repeated copyright warnings.

I wasn't able to locate any free options, VLC doesn't support them. They likely need a license to decode blurays, which explains the lack of free players. Personally, I use PowerDVD—it's not perfect, but it has limited competition. I think Nero might be another choice. Unless you have a G-Sync monitor with just one display port and no HDMI, the best approach seems to be using a standalone Bluray player connected directly to your monitor and switching inputs as needed.

That's exactly what I was considering (requiring a license fee for use). If necessary, PowerDVD might be my only choice. I'm not thrilled about it, but I appreciate it nonetheless.

I was working with Arcsoft's Totalmedia Theatre 6 and discovered it doesn't work on Windows 10. I encountered a frustrating corrupt memory BSOD and had to reinstall Windows. It seems the software is no longer available on their site, possibly because game developers aren't happy with broken products. I'm giving this a score of 1 to the competition and turned on my PS4 for the first time in a week, relieved I'm not alone in this disappointment.

You opted for PowerDVD because you trusted it and had a functional version (PowerDvD 10). I also attempted the VLC approach, but it didn’t work reliably.
