Power supply insufficient for GPU operation.
Hello, I recently purchased an Rx 6600 from MSI and am struggling to reach its full power usage. My GPU is limited to 100 watts according to AMD Adrenalin and GPU Z, while my friend with the same card can increase its draw. I’ve installed the latest BIOS update and AMD Adrenalin, but formatting Windows didn’t help. I suspect the motherboard might be the problem, though I’m not sure. My specs are: CPU – AMD Ryzen 5 2600, Motherboard – Gigabyte A320m S2H V2 rev 1.0 (B350), GPU – MSI Rx 6600 MECH 2X (PCIe 8x 3.0), PSU – BeQuiet System Power 9 400W, RAM – 2x 8GB at 3200Mhz, Patriot Viper 4 SSD, and a 500Gb SATA and 500Gb NVMe drive. I’ve also tried overclocking the graphics card, but it still caps at 100 watts. If the motherboard is the issue, I’m considering an Asus Prime B450M-A II. Any recommendations on better motherboards would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!
It looks like the software's reported power usage is only part of the GPU's actual consumption. You should account for an additional 15-30% based on the card model to get the true power draw. From what I understand, the card should consume around 132W.
If it matches the clock speed, it’s expected. Keep in mind the power cap is what the card can safely manage and you won’t run every bit of memory at once. For NVIDIA models, I seldom see my 4090 exceed 400W under full speed and full GPU load—because 100% usage doesn’t always mean all chips are active. It’s likely more about the rendering pipeline being engaged fully. Since different tasks (raster, RT, compute, video encoding) vary, the numbers will be approximations. How each workload runs will change, so some sessions might look higher than others. As for 3D Mark, your score is a bit below average, but on a budget motherboard that could limit CPU performance. The RX 6600 is a PCIe4 x8 card.
