Hi, I'm in Lebanon and have two choices: an i5 11400 for 200$ or an i5 12400 for 215$. Most other CPUs are significantly over their MSRP. I picked the 11400 because I wanted to add a mid-range card like the 6600xt and run at 1080p 144Hz. I went with the Biostar H510 (80$) since I don’t need extra features. After checking benchmarks, it’s clear that the stock power limits on the 11400 are worse than the i5 10400—it actually performs better when you lift those limits. My question is whether I can bypass the power caps to unlock the full performance of this CPU on a budget board. The MSI H510-A Pro (90$) or B560M-A Pro (100$) might help, but only if they support that kind of tuning. Just removing the power cap isn’t overclocking—it’s about getting more out of the chip. According to what I understand, the power limit for the H510 chipset isn't unlockable. The 11400 works, but not the 12400. The 12400 is only compatible with 600 series chipsets.
In fact, all chip sets support power limit adjustments in BIOS. The issue lies in the inadequate heatsink, causing temperatures to exceed 90 degrees, which leads to thermal throttling and makes the solution ineffective. Would you consider using the B660M if you pick the i5-12400 instead?
I’d pick the 12400—it’s quicker than the 11400 and consumes less power. It works smoothly on most 600-series boards. If your setup supports advanced chips such as the MSI Pro B660M-A, you’ll also benefit from upgrade paths when the 13th-gen models arrive, like the 13700.
Hi, I was thinking about getting an i5 12400. Then I saw a video showing how pairing it with a 3060 at 1080p makes a big difference. The changes between the 10th, 11th, and 12th generation chips aren’t huge. I decided to spend $110 more to upgrade from the RX 6600 to the RX 6600XT.
