I recently assembled a new PC with a fresh Windows 11 installation. Once everything was configured and I was installing the side panel, I noticed static electricity at the corner of my case. My monitors went dark while all internal lights stayed lit. After turning off the power supply and waiting a short time, I reconnected it and the PC started working normally. However, I experienced occasional crashes to desktop in certain games (RDR2 and Lego Journey) and a strange visual glitch resembling a permanent screen tear, appearing about a quarter of the way down the monitor during cutscenes in Control. Could this be linked to the static discharge? Or is this just a coincidence?

I’ll try your ideas when I’m back, but I need to clarify—would resetting the windows via settings help fix those possibly corrupt files? Edited June 26, 2023 by Zer0BL2

It varies. The DISM restore health command verifies the system image to confirm it isn't damaged via Windows Update. SFC then examines the system using that image. If the image is faulty, resetting Windows likely won't make much difference—garbage in, garbage out.

You noticed a spark from a short circuit and likely damaged something. The static should be outside the computer, not inside. Your setup probably had an issue. Updated June 26, 2023 by leclod

It was completely static electricity. The computer had been operating smoothly for over 30 minutes without any problems before. I just removed the plastic covering on the side panel and noticed a noticeable static charge in the air. As soon as I made contact between the panel and the case, a small spark appeared at the bottom-right corner where they met. Except for rare instances of the PC crashing to the desktop during some games, everything boots up and runs perfectly. All components are properly seated. I’ve taken the side panel in and out while it’s running and never seen any sparks. It seems there’s nothing permanently damaged either. Function works fine except for occasional crashes to the desktop in certain titles. If something were permanently broken, it wouldn’t even start up.

Occasionally static charges can leave traces in capacitors. A recent incident a few months ago showed the computer refusing to cold boot after a static spark near a USB port. Disconnect the power supply (don’t switch off the outlet) and hold the power button for 10–15 seconds. This should release all stored capacitors, possibly resolving the problem.

It seems you're unsure about some details. I'm not sure if the issue is hardware-related. Could you try matching that "tear about 1/4 of the way down the monitor only in cutscenes in Control" using the IGPU without a GPU? I don't know if that's possible. Also, are you using the system at default settings—checking RAM and drivers? Edited June 26, 2023 by leclod
