I was checking performance earlier today using Digital Foundry's data as a reference. In two games—AC: Odyssey and Rise of the Tomb Raider—I was seeing much lower frame rates compared to DF's 99 FPS. Here are my system details. Any guidance would be really helpful before making any changes, so I can avoid costly errors. My specs are: CPU Core i7 5820K OC'd to 4.2GHz, Mobo Asus X99-A, 4x4GB G.Skill DDR4 RAM, GPU GeForce RTX 2080 Ti.
I'm sure most serious benchmarks for the RTX 2080 Ti came from reliable sources using the i9 9900K or i7 8086K. These chips are significantly faster than the i7 5820K today, especially when paired with high-speed memory. Did you consider that factor?
Higher resolution means greater reliance on the GPU, which can lead to CPU limitations. For example, at 1080p with 144Hz, the CPU might become a constraint.
Maybe the problem lies with the RAM. I'll look into getting better RAM and/or updating my motherboard/CPU to newer specs. The resolution is 1440p, and I actually outperformed their score in the Shadow of the Tomb Raider test. If I upgraded to something like DDR4 3400, how would I optimize it? Would XMP be the right approach? I'm fairly experienced with PC components but feel uncertain in this specific area.
GPU readings sometimes appear inaccurate, but when the CPU reports 100%, it usually suffices. I've noticed GPUs reaching 100% usage while playing 4K videos without overheating or noticeable strain on 2D content.
Consider upgrading your motherboard and CPU if you want better performance.
