Possibly affected by the 2080Ti?
I recently placed a low-ball offer on eBay for a used 2080Ti, and things turned out okay. Now that the item is in my system, performance seems inconsistent. My current configuration includes a 11900k at stock settings, 32GB RAM, a Seasonic Focus 750w power supply, and the 2080Ti. When launching games, it crashes within a minute or two, sometimes I can’t even start the game. Through GPUZ and Afterburner, I notice it freezes when reaching a hotspot temperature of 105°C or drawing around 275W. This model is Gaming X Trio with 2 8Pins and 1 6Pin, all connected via separate cables to the PSU. I suspect the GPU might be damaged—especially since it arrived in a poorly packed condition with visible grime. It also had a sweet odor. After removing the backplate and cleaning with IPA, no corrosion or burn marks were found. It seems this could require a full disassembly, cleaning, and re-pasting to fix.
It could be due to the seller's condition. If you received it used and it isn't working, you have options—return it even if the listing says no returns. For part or non-functional units, you're covered. You might also try reapplying thermal paste (like Thermal Grizzly's Hydronaut) to test. Your 750W rating shouldn’t cause issues if it’s only drawing 275W, especially since your 11900K won’t consume 500W in-game. The 30-series tends to be unstable under sudden loads, which could lead to power draw spikes and trip your PSU’s protection settings.
It was listed as "Used" but the seller mentioned "untested." I reached out to clarify without involving eBay, but he insisted the item wouldn’t need to function properly. I’m handing it over to eBay for resolution. Notably, the graphics driver reset only affected the game, not Explorer or other monitors, which stayed operational as usual.
The only option that comes to mind is vape juice from a vaping setup. I purchased used Noctua fans on eBay, but they smelled bad. The seller didn’t mention it until I reached out and they confirmed it was in someone’s PC where someone was vaping. They offered a return, which I accepted because the smell couldn’t be removed. Still, used items aren’t new or original, and they should have labeled them as “For parts” since they weren’t tested. It would have been better if the seller had marked it that way.
Oh wow! It’s going to be one of those sellers... for sure, if they’re feeling snarky, they might be covering something up.
Maybe it’s safe to assume he didn’t buy it. His claim about not being able to test it suggests it might not have been a purchased item.
No, just model trains. Even though his profile says no returns it appears he has accepted a return this time? So I guess this card will just be going back. To be honest, still not convinced $180 for a working 2080Ti was even that amazing of a deal?
