Possible Upgrade Paths for M4A785-M
Hey there! Welcome to the forum. I'm just starting out and would really appreciate any advice. With a limited budget, upgrading my PC is important. I have an M4A785 motherboard, an AMD Phenom II X4 945 CPU, two 2GB Crucial Technology 400MHz RAM sticks and one 1GB Micron Technology 266 MHz stick. My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760. I'm not very experienced with PC builds, so any suggestions would be super helpful! Thanks a lot!
Not much better processors available. Possibly an X6 model. DDR2 memory might be a bit costly. You could try 4x 2gb DDR2 at 800MHz, but it might be too expensive.
You handle it by choosing the right approach depending on the situation. For tasks needing heavy threading, x6 offers a 50% boost in performance. For non-threaded work, it runs slower. Most modern CPUs today outperform older models, and even dual-core chips are faster overall.
Avoid upgrading unless you notice a real boost in performance. Changing to a newer CPU or more RAM won’t make much difference unless you replace the existing components. Also, used prices for these items can drop to match newer models. As I mentioned, every new part usually offers better performance, even the cheapest options.
Consider checking game streaming options if your connection is sufficient.
