Possible bottleneck in QuestionRTX 5090
Hello PC wizards,
I have an RTX 5090 GIGABYTE gaming OC paired with an I7 13700k, all set up in an ASUS Prime Z690 motherboard with a D4 Mobo and 32 GB RAM.
I’m noticing slightly low FPS, especially in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. The performance is better than my old RTX 4090 but still not significantly higher. I also sometimes see low GPU usage, which is normal at 4K.
My drivers are up to date, and the GPU reports 176 ROPS. Temperatures are within limits—around 62°C max—and memory stays under 68°C as per HWINFO and MSI afterburner beta.
Could you let me know if upgrading my CPU to an i9 14900k would improve these results?
It's conceivable that sometimes your CPU struggles to maintain the 5090's data flow. The gap between the 13700k and 14900k models will be small, particularly at 4k resolution. Your FPS remains strong as you mentioned. How much quicker is your 5090 compared to the 4090?
The inquiry focuses on the extent of improvement.
Performance constraints come from both CPU and GPU.
Numerous titles rely heavily on the single-thread speed of the master thread.
To estimate the effect of a 14900K upgrade, consider this experiment:
In Windows Power Management, lower the maximum CPU usage from 100% to around 90%.
Observe the changes in your game's performance.
A significant drop suggests CPU is a major factor, making the upgrade worthwhile.
Also, ensure you have the most recent motherboard BIOS for any 13th or 14th generation processor.
Perhaps about 15 percent quicker, though that's not particularly impressive.
For reference, the 5090 was roughly 25% quicker than the 4090 when using a 9800X3D at 4K resolution. Choosing a 13900k brought only about a 20% improvement. At your level of around 15% faster, it falls within expected variation, suggesting a possible 5% increase with a 14900k.
That's exactly what I intended to convey when I saw the comment. The 5090 doesn't represent a major improvement over the 4090.
