Poor Minecraft performance, stuttering issues.
Hey, I recently started playing Minecraft again and the experience is quite disappointing. I'm using a 2560x1440 monitor at 144hz with G-Sync active, and the settings look correct from the screenshot. But in-game, my frame rate drops to 40-120 FPS while just moving around. Even when my FPS reaches 100-120, it feels choppy, like I'm experiencing a lower refresh rate. G-Sync remains on, but other games like Sottr show smooth performance with more variable FPS.
I haven't installed OptiFine because in the latest version (1.14.4) I frequently encounter small FPS drops when switching between chunks, which is really frustrating. I've tried everything I can think of and still don't have a solution.
I've attached a video for reference, though it's only 60fps and the monitor quality isn't ideal. I just feel like my hardware should be capable of much higher FPS in Minecraft, while others with similar specs seem to achieve 250-300 FPS easily.
Thanks,
Henry
It works well for the future, thank you a lot, but it didn’t improve the poor performance. Also, occasionally when I do something random—like minimizing Chrome or opening Spotify—I notice my monitor or FPS drops to 60 frames per second, then sometimes recovers, which is strange. This happens in the Minecraft launcher, even though FPS can be above 60 at times. It feels odd. I’ll check with my monitor’s built-in FPS counter. Still doesn’t clarify the overall slowdown. I should expect more than that with an i5 8600K and an RTX 2070.
What type of hard drive are you using? Check the Task Manager for details. See what other processes are active.
Do you know if G-sync is enabled for all windows or just full screen apps? If it's set to all windows, your FPS will stay consistent across any window you use as the main one. For example, in Chrome or other apps that only run at 30fps, G-sync will adjust the refresh rate accordingly. Make sure it's enabled for fullscreen applications if you haven't already. Minecraft can be sensitive even on powerful systems; try lowering the chunks and render distance to see if performance improves.
Right. I believe I've identified the problem, though I'm unsure of the cause. (Also, my G-Sync was configured for fullscreen only applications.) In Minecraft, when using fullscreen, my FPS is limited to 60, which makes it stutter at higher frame rates. Do you have any suggestions about why this is occurring? It isn't capped in windowed mode, but fullscreen consistently limits me to 60fps.
My highest frame rate in the Minecraft configuration is without limit, and the resolution is adjusted to the present setting.
Does your refresh rate in the Windows display settings not match 144hz? Right-click on the desktop, choose display settings, advanced display settings, display adapter properties for your monitor, and then click the monitor tab. If it shows 60hz there, that could be the problem, even if you adjusted it to 144hz in the NVIDIA control panel.
