Hey there, so I recently installed a new PC and everything seemed normal for a while. Then today an update to AMD Adrenalin appeared, prompting me to install it. The process froze, the system crashed, and it restarted. During startup, I saw a PWM memory training error at socket 0 channel 1. When Windows booted, RAM performance was significantly below expectations even though XMP was enabled. The CPU is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900x, motherboard is Gigabyte x570 Aorus Master, and the RAM is 32 GB (two 16 GB sticks). I tried removing one stick to test booting with just one in slot B2, but it still wouldn’t post. The other stick also didn’t work. Error code C5 appeared. Switching to the secondary BIOS didn’t fix it. It seems the RAM isn’t utilizing XMP properly and is running at 15/15/15 at 1000MHz. There’s no PWM error message when using slot A1/B1 or A2/B2, but I’m not sure if the monitor catches it. I’m puzzled about why this happened and how to get it to boot with just one stick. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
When relocating RAM, always reset the CMOS. Slot A1 suits single sticks with one channel; use A2 and B2 for dual channels and two sticks. Your memory requirements are important for assistance. I typically request the part number. Capture a screenshot of the CPU-Z memory info and SPD details, plus the BIOS SPD tab. You're right, I forgot to clear the cmos when I swapped the sticks to different slots, so that will be my first step.I'm on a different computer at the moment so I can't get the screenshots for you right now but the part number for the memory is F4-3600C16D-32GTZNC (G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory). I tried to set the timings manually (it's my first time ever manually doing the timings) by following Hardware Unboxed's video guide but after getting in to the bios there was too many things that didn't match up with the information from the DRAM calculator so I didn't go through with it to avoid screwing it up more. I'll need to get cpu-z when I'm able to get back to that PC to update with those screenshots, I think I only have cpuid and hwinfo on there currently. Thanks again, I've got somewhere to start now
I'm worried about this situation. I cleared the CMOS, applied the XMP settings, and booted into Windows, thinking everything was working. After a few minutes, the system shut down, restarted, and froze at the Windows logo. It rebooted but then displayed strange BIOS settings. The CPU reported 4268.46Mhz at 1.008v, while the memory showed 4043.80Mhz at 1.38v. I restored everything using CPU-Z and saw the numbers change unexpectedly. The optimized defaults loaded correctly, but the CPU speed jumped to 3.814Mhz at 1.068v and memory reached 2141Mhz at 1.224v. I don’t understand why the CPU overclocked or why the memory spiked on its own. I’ve attached the screenshots you requested—they show the state before and after the crash. Also, when I first used CPU-Z on the SPD tab, it displayed memory slots 2/4, but after booting back in, it showed slots 1/2 with empty values. What’s happening?

Hi everyone, here’s what I learned from following all the advice in this discussion. My main problem was that the Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus Master board didn’t recognize the RAM slots. I tried several things to narrow it down: I swapped four RAM modules into different slots to see which one the BIOS picked up. It worked—all modules were recognized—but one specific slot still refused to accept any RAM, even when set up in multi-channel mode. I re-seated both RAM and the graphics card multiple times without success. After clearing the CMOS and using the Qflash Plus method (which required updating the BIOS via a USB drive with the new files), things finally improved. The Gigabyte guide mentioned you can only update the main BIOS without the CPU, which seemed to be the right path since everything else was working.
