You're set up with a Truenas server and are looking for a Linux distribution to run Plex. It sounds like you prefer a lightweight option that works well with remote access—something you can connect to from Windows 11 and use a GUI for ease. Consider alternatives like LXC/LXD containers, lightweight distros such as LXSS or Alpine-based setups, or even a minimal Ubuntu installation if you need more flexibility. These will let you enjoy Plex with remote desktop support without the TPM headaches or GPU limitations.

Would this suit Plex playback? Do you need HDR enabled? It may function on Linux, but Windows now offers better performance. For virtual environments, create a virtual TPM for the VM. A traditional Debian setup would be ideal. If using TrueNAS in a VM, consider a virtual GPU.

You don't rely on a virtual machine; your Plex server is active on Ubuntu.

You're asking about a Linux distribution tailored for Plex media servers. It means a Linux setup specifically designed to work with Plex, allowing you to run it directly on the server without needing additional virtual machines or operating systems.

Additionally (unless things have shifted lately), Plex offers an application for TrueNAS; simply install it, adjust the necessary configurations, and you're good to proceed. It should provide some GPU acceleration capabilities as well.

Oh wow, I had no idea what you were talking about. I just checked around and saw what you meant. It looks like you can install it on TrueNAS. TYVM

Typically when a NAS operating system is available, Plex is usually the first application installed

Man, trying to fix things I didn’t realize I was doing at first is super frustrating. I attempted to install Plex but had to update first, then used Truenas on an Optane drive because there wasn’t enough space, so I moved it elsewhere and adjusted settings. Everything was confusing—I’m not sure how to proceed now. Thanks for all the help and guidance!
