I'm looking at an EVGA 3060 with a Ryzen 7 5800X. I'm thinking about moving to the Nvidia 50-series, possibly a 5060 or 5070, maybe even the 4070. Likely I'll need to upgrade my CPU if that's the case. What AMD options do you recommend? Also, I've heard to hold off on new AMD GPUs until they release. What do you think?

The Ryzen 5800x remains a solid choice for gaming. You won’t need to worry about it compared to older models like the 4070 Super or 5070. Upgrading to a more recent CPU would likely boost performance, though the 5800X already delivers playable frame rates. For the next big upgrade, a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 series would be ideal. New AMD graphics cards are expected soon in March, so if you can wait, do it. The 5070 will be available in February, which means the gap between releases won’t be too long.

I favor affordable AMD CPUs that still offer solid performance.

The Ryzen 7700X paired with an RTX 4080 is a solid choice for gaming. The 9600x/9700x models are indeed quicker but come at a higher price. I own a Ryzen 7700X with an RTX 4080 and enjoy playing on it. Here are two images from Hardware Unboxed showing the RTX 4090 at both 1080p and 1440p, covering about ten games. A 5800X is also listed on the chart, though it appears lower in the rankings yet still delivers solid frame rates. A 4070 Super or AMD equivalent will lag behind the 4090, so you won’t be overly reliant on CPU power. Let me know if this helps.

I understand the need to pause, particularly if your existing setup is working well. By the summer, updates will be released and likely ready for purchase. If you need something, it’ll be simpler to choose.

Choose the top GPU in the 5000 lineup you can afford. Later, if needed, upgrade to a 9700x or a baller 9800x3d. Alternatively, opt for a core ultra 265. Play at 1440p or 4k and don’t worry about the CPU much.
