It functions with your CPU, but for improved cooling a case might be necessary for the 240.

I'm not entirely clear on what "stack" refers to in your question. If you're wondering, "Does it stack up against a similarly priced air cooler?" then the answer is no... CLC doesn't outperform comparable air coolers.
