Hey everyone,
Here are my current components:
CPU: i5-3470
GPU: RX 580
RAM: 16GB DDR3
Motherboard: Gigabyte P61A-D3 (DDR3)
I’m thinking about swapping the CPU to an i7-3770 and installing a Deepcool Gamma Archer cooler.
I’m limited by budget and don’t want to replace the motherboard just yet, so I’m looking for the best possible performance from what I have.
Is this an adequate upgrade for gaming?
Will the cooler handle the heat from the 3770?
Are there any better alternatives that fit this socket and DDR3 configuration?
My main use is gaming.
Please help me out.

There might be alternative solutions without requiring an upgrade.
It's not very considerate to ask others to focus when they're seeking details for a better response. Nonetheless, upgrading to a 3770 might offer slight improvements in certain games that benefit from hyperthreading, but changing a 13-year-old CPU to another with a higher clock speed and hyperthreading won't significantly alter your experience. Everything that works well on your current system will continue to work, while anything that doesn't will not.
You’ll notice a noticeable bump when upgrading to the i7 3770.
However, I’d advise checking current real-time prices first—realizing the price increase has been significant.
If you manage to find a good deal, you’ll still get solid performance and most features will remain available.
I’ve personally kept working with i7 3770 models and other older systems, and they still respond well with a simple power button.
These units have some remaining life, though their lifespan is limited or they’ve reached end-of-life.
Just a reminder that for a GPU, the GTX 1080ti is the current recommendation.
Regarding your CPU cooler, I haven’t used that specific model before—could you share a picture if you’d like me to identify it?
I mainly enjoy playing intense games such as The Last of Us Part II. I understand it’s a tough game, but I believe boosting the CPU could make a difference. Yet, I’ve heard that the i7-3770 tends to get very hot, so I’m searching for a powerful cooler like the GAMMAXX 300 or something comparable.
In general, I’m uncertain and feeling confused about whether to upgrade the CPU. Will it improve my FPS? In my view, it will, but I’m not confident about the trade-offs given the heat concerns. I’m just really unsure at the moment.
As far as the heat from the i7 3770 is concerned, I’ve tested it on older Dell XPS 8500s and still found the OEM CPU cooler from Dell to be sufficient. No need for overclocking.
As I mentioned, upgrading to the i7 3770 instead of the i5 would provide a bit more power, though pushing it to run The Last of Us Part II will still be demanding.
If I owned the game, my response might differ.
I can’t comment on how it would perform on the older system, but given the CPU specs between the i7 3770 and i3 8100, they’re quite similar in performance.
You might encounter problems with the RX 580, but I don’t own that game—I usually wait for a good sale before purchasing it.
However, I can confirm we have three RX 580 units, and so far none of them have had issues with the model.
