Playing with Unreal Engine 5 and getting things done in our everyday lives.
Hey guys! Hope you're doing good. Sometimes it makes us question if we are looking at a real video or not. I think the day light looks pretty close to how things actually feel. But at night, it changes... WHY? Thanks for watching the Polygon demo link here: https://www.polygon.com/23064113/unreal-...ation-demo
The only thing I feel is weird about is how the flashlight effect makes the scene look like it came from a video game. It feels too awkward and centered, coming out of nowhere in particular. That could just mean that nighttime lighting looks harder to get right than during the day. If they had shown the station with rain or if it was dark outside instead, things might not have been as realistic. Just my thoughts on this.
Thanks so much for your comment and help with the game. I don't think all games will be perfect because of how they look, but I hope they turn out great in the end. Have a nice day!
I feel like the night scene is set up for standard dynamic range instead of HDR. Or maybe just compressed dynamic range. If you think about how the virtual camera works normally, I'd expect those light fixtures to be overexposed and glowing with bloom, plus something close to the flash should show some glow too. The reflections on the platform also look weird. Look at 1:19 in the video; that platform looks way too dull. There should be a bright streak of light going down from the light fixture's reflection. For a better comparison, check out this video of someone walking through the streets at night while it's raining in Japan.
I tried the Matrix demo for you, man! It actually looks great, like a few angles look pretty realistic. Check out this Matrix Awakens PC video using Unreal Engine 5 and an RX 6800 GPU to see the City Sample gameplay on YouTube.
