Internet's acting up, so I'm thinking about getting a physical copy. If I get a GTA 5 hardcover, it won't work with Steam, right? Then I wonder if I can play with my friend who has the digital version. Probably not, so maybe I'll just buy it from Steam and preload it myself.

Sure, just visit the library and include non-steam games—remember, the GTA servers aren’t hosted on Steam.

The game supports multiplayer independently, as both Rockstar and Valve offer it, so there should be no issues.

To join online, you need to use the most recent version available on the server. For multiplayer, everyone must be on the same latest update. This physical format doesn’t help with multiplayer features.

It would include all the necessary components. Unless a Day One patch exists (given how long they've been working on the game, a Day One update probably isn't needed), OP should be okay. And even if one appears, it shouldn't be overly extensive since most assets are already present and any changes would likely be minor adjustments.

Thanks for the help guys, my mate just told me that if you get the disk, put it in, it will just take me to steam and then it'll just be like buying off of steam, can anyone confirm this? If so i will just buy it off of steam then,

It might require you to go through steam, but the process depends on how the disk is constructed... Still, it should function regardless of whether it's connected to steam.
