Playing videos causes delays on AMD GPU when it's operating near full capacity
While playing games with GPU usage nearing 99%, using videos on another screen like YouTube in browsers such as Chomium and on Discord would cause noticeable stuttering, making it difficult to watch. After additional testing, it became clear that running DX11 at windowed or borderless settings with the GPU at full capacity leads to this problem. Some games lack exclusive fullscreen options, so the issue remains unresolved. This affects both of us since we use AMD 6000 series graphics cards (RX 6600XT and 6800XT). I don’t play Discord during gaming, so it didn’t bother me. However, my sister experienced this after switching from Nvidia to AMD about six months ago. She’s now thinking about reverting to Nvidia. Before making a decision, I’m curious if there’s another solution I missed. In the meantime, I’ll attempt fixes on my PC, hoping the same applies to her setup. Here’s what I tried:
- Secondary monitor refresh rate doesn’t matter (60Hz or matching main monitor’s 160Hz)
- Used Firefox (not suitable for Discord)
- DDU updates didn’t resolve the problem
- Turned off hardware acceleration in Discord (no improvement)
- Second GPU (GT 710) with hardware acceleration disabled worked for me, but her case wouldn’t fit even at low settings
- Disabled MPO from a link (no effect)
- Rolled back the driver to 22.5.1, but it still didn’t fix it
- Tried disabling full-screen optimization later
- Tested other games; results were not recorded in the past
If needed, I can cap FPS to help her maximize performance.
Other suggestions:
- Go back to the AMD driver 22.5.1 (previous stable release)
- Consider alternative drivers or versions
- Adjust settings like full-screen or refresh rate
- Explore case upgrades if possible
I’m open to ideas and want to see if a solution exists.
Highly unlikely it's a hardware issue or an issue with corrupt drivers since both of you are experiencing the same thing. Might just be bad drivers, which unfortunately can't be fixed, or possibly some software setting. Only thing I can think of is to check display scaling, but not really sure that could even cause this. Could just nuke it and do a full reinstall but, again, doesn't seem likely that would fix it. Any difference if you swap displays? And it's only the video playback that's affected, and the game is fine?
Scale doesn't affect me since I stick to 100% while my sister uses 150%. Changing displays didn't help. We're not ready to reinstall Windows yet. The game works, but video playback isn't smooth. I believe she should limit FPS until then. Upgrading the GPU might be a better option. I guess I could add this too: switching to an Nvidia card wouldn't fix it because of its own problems. Video is fine, but Gsync fails for games running in DX11 borderless windowed mode. This happened when she had a 2080 and I tried it again with a 3050 on my living room PC.
Sorry, I don't have the necessary information. This topic falls outside my expertise. I hope another person provides more context or details.
