You can use a FPS display or monitor to show frame per second. To disable aero, check your settings or controls and turn it off.

Consider using one of these options: fraps or MSI Afterburner. I personally prefer fraps for beginners. Your Windows version might affect performance—right-click the desktop, choose personalize, and set it to Windows 7 Basic to reduce VRAM usage, though fullscreen mode still limits background graphics.

To turn off Aero while using a program, simply check the box for 'Disable Desktop Composition' in the compatibility settings you find after right-clicking and choosing properties. You can adjust this setting per program instead of reapplying it each time. This also prevents the annoying Windows message about high graphics memory and lets you switch tabs easily from your games.
