My RTX 2080 has terrible lag when I turn it up for overclocking, but my 3DMark Time Spy tests show everything working perfectly and smoothly. Why do the game results act like this? Or am I supposed to be playing games while turning things up so high?

So, lower down on how much to overheat. Those fake scores from tests don't always work well when playing games. Real testing comes from actually using your card and checking if it breaks anything.

Checking if something works with a benchmark isn't always enough to make sure things work well in real life. Sometimes you might have trouble even when playing only one specific game. If you take that extra boost off, will all those problems disappear?

Sure, if you don't set your graphics card to go faster than it's designed for, there won't be any lag.

So, try lowering the boost clock. Testing with synthetic scores won't tell everything about how it works in real life. You really need to run some real games to check for problems on your GPU.
