Playing games online through a local network with an AMD system
Hey guys, I've run into a wall trying to set something up and figured asking others for help might be the only option at this point. Basically the situation looks like this: - I've got a 4K TV in my living room (Sony 55XE7005) - my PC with three monitors (two 1080p and one 1440p) is in my bedroom Those two rooms are separated by kitchen, so it'd be quite a hassle to run a long HDMI cable to it. In general what I'd like to achieve is be able to use my PC on TVs native resolution over LAN, mostly for gaming. I've got a gigabit connection set up at home and both my PC and my TV are connected using Cat 6 ethernet cables, so I'm assuming bandwidth and latency for streaming should not be a problem. A couple of my PC specs: - Ryzen 7 3700X - 32GBs of RAM - a couple SSDs, both M.2 and SATA - Radeon RX 6800 XT - motherboard with 2.5G ethernet support (although I'd need to change the rest of my setup to properly utilize it, including the TV) I've tried connecting my ultrabook to my TV and using in-home Streaming, but, even disregarding the fact that it has a low HDMI standard and can only run at 4K at 30Hz, the overall latency was pretty terrible and it only allowed me to stream Steam games, which isn't ideal. I've read up on nVidia Shield and apparently it should (?) be able to do this but then I am using an AMD GPU, so I'm not sure whether it would work? I was also thinking about just building a small HTPC and streaming to it, but frankly, I'm not sure how setting it up would work - is there a way to set up a virtual monitor with a resolution of 3840x2160 on the gaming PC and then stream whatever is rendered on it to the TV, while passing the input (keyboard/mouse/gamepad) from the HTPC? On a final note, and I know this is wishful thinking, if it was possible to do it with HDR as well, that'd be great. If you've read this far, thank you for your time! You're awesome!
You can achieve this using a Raspberry Pi. A NUC might work best. Avoid thinking HDR is feasible.
You might want to clarify your requirements more clearly. A compact HTPC could handle this task, though I’m uncertain about the software options needed for streaming your PC’s desktop at 4K resolution over a LAN connection. The main challenges seem to be: displaying the desktop in 4K while your PC is linked to lower-resolution screens, transmitting the video with low delay, and ensuring peripherals work smoothly in the living room. I’ve noticed HDMI over LAN extenders exist, but it appears more cost-effective to assemble a small HTPC from existing components rather than purchasing one optimized for 4K at that frame rate.
