Playing games online from your personal computer while you're outside?
I don’t know the exact method, but it might need a router that supports VPN. My current router already allows remote connections to devices on my home network via VPN. If GTA wasn’t purchased from Steam, you could add it to Steam, though this may not work with Steam Link. Internet speed could also be an issue unless you stream at lower resolutions and frame rates. I’m sure 2.4GHz Wi-Fi isn’t sufficient for local Steam Link, as my phone only handles 2.4GHz and can’t stream 720p at 30fps, while my 5GHz Chromebook streams 1440p at 60fps over my network.
Well Ik its 2.4GHz idk if its 5GHz, but I did do some research and found a gaming service called "Vortex", heres the link:
https://vortex.gg/
Basically has a library of games and you download the app, need to download the app (which luckily my phone supports) and in the library the service supports, the paid games must be either paid for in steam or in their original sites. It has Fortnite and GTA V which are the main games I will play, plus has controller support. I believe its £7.60which I can support. Also when I did go in Kosovo, I did a ping test to check out the connection, it came up as "Fair", and should be able to get decent frame rates. Also I dont mind playing 720p and 30FPS is perfect.
But is this method worth it? Just for reference I really only wanna play Fortnite and GTA V and maybe Fallout 4 too when I go abroad (this cloud gaming service supports both), and its £7.60
monthly.
Many Thanks for the previous help though.
PS: Do you think I will get any lag? If so how much if I play lets say, 2 hours a day?
2.4Ghz wifi on an old phone with at best 25mbps internet will be unreliable. You'll likely experience significant lag, depending on the stability of your connection and the quality of the service; it might be fairly consistent. This setup seems to be your most viable choice for remote play at the moment. 720p could bring you close to 30fps with that bandwidth. FYI, 30fps isn't ideal, particularly in games like Fortnite; however, it might be the highest you can achieve on a good day.
Depending on how slow or unstable your phone is (assuming Vortex is well-optimized and stable), this could greatly influence whether your experience is positive or negative.
If I were you, I’d wait until you return. Order the necessary parts and just wait until you’re back to assemble it, or wait until you can get more competitive pricing. By then, a 3rd generation Ryzen should be available, allowing you to potentially build a better system for the same cost. I’m saying this because Vortex relies on their servers rather than your own PC—you’d have built your own system, only to rent out servers instead of using it yourself.
That's correct, but when I return I'm really occupied with college/ sixth form and looking for a job, so I probably won't have time to build a PC afterward. The system I chose works well for me. I agree with you that the Vortex solution is the best option. Also, the internet abroad seems stable, and my phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE (4G Version). I don't think it matters much on older phones with Vortex, and the signal there is decent. Thanks for your previous message.
