Playing games inside a virtual machine...
I'm tired of Windows and want to run Linux only. The main issue is playing Overwatch, which didn't work well in Wine—it stuttered and lagged. I considered using a virtual machine, thinking my PC could handle it. My specs are: two Xeon X5650 processors (12 cores, 24 threads total), 24GB RAM, a GTX 780Ti graphics card, and an Intel S5520HC motherboard. I heard a second GPU might be needed, but I have an extra GTX 1050 that can go in via a PCI-E X1 to X16 adapter. I need recommendations for tutorials and want to confirm if my setup is sufficient.
I'm still searching for a reliable option. I usually try games that work well with Wine or run natively on Linux, and the 1050 meets those needs for Overwatch. I prefer keeping my 780Ti for other tasks.
Arch wiki remains relevant even without arch. Core concepts and guidelines stay consistent. Level1tech and/or Level1linux are featured on YouTube channels. OpenSuse details can be found at the provided link, while Fedora discussions appear on forums. The Passthrough Post and VFIO subreddit offer support and advice. A Discord channel exists for community interaction, and users appreciate the helpfulness of members. For distributions, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and Fedora are highlighted as straightforward options, with Fedora being slightly more user-friendly. Tumbleweed benefits from additional testing and stability, making it a solid choice (Zypper is recommended for package management).
Even though you're not using Arch, checking their wiki is helpful. My main system is a Fedora box and my servers are based on Debian derivatives, yet I still rely on the Arch wiki :-) OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is a continuous release similar to Arch, but they perform extensive automated testing to prevent issues. After testing it for VMs, VFIO, and Passthrough over several months, it proved stable. It kept up-to-date with Arch or at least wasn't many days behind. My main reason to switch was my preference for Fedora :3
I ran Fedora on my laptop and it crashed completely. I won't be using that OS anymore. I'm considering OpenSUSE instead.
