Playing games and streaming on e5 2630 v3
He has a few extra E5 2630 v3 CPUs and plenty of DDR4 ECC RAM. What he needs to purchase is a new motherboard from Ali Express. I plan to buy one with an x99 chipset and DDR4 support, costing about $110 for one CPU or around $160 for two. Right now I own an I7 4770 with boost clocks up to 3.9 GHz, which runs faster than the 2630’s max turbo of 3.2 GHz. The I7 has half the cores compared to the E5, but I’m considering whether more cores would help with streaming or if lower performance is realistic given the slower speeds. I’m not planning a big upgrade soon, so I’m weighing keeping the I7 against getting a better option later. If I get the right board, my girlfriend will swap her I7 2600 for it. Thanks for the advice!
It should work just fine, though it won’t match the performance of a higher-clocked version from that era.
I've got everything set up as described. The motherboard is Z97-A USB 3... unfortunately, I can't overclock it and I don't want to invest in a higher-end version just for the sake of it. A Ryxen 2600 model with 250+ is fine, but you'd need to factor in the board and RAM costs, making it not worth it. If I have to spend around $110 for the Chinese motherboard, I'll go with the 3600 or better instead. It's a choice between spending about $110 or sticking with what I have.
