I haven't played Assassin's Creed before, but with the upcoming Syndicate release, it looks like a solid choice for a controller experience instead of the mouse and keyboard. The game features animation-driven movement and combat, making the controller feel more natural. Many players find this style enhances immersion and control. Looking at past entries in the series, similar mechanics have generally been well-received for their fluidity and engagement.
Consoles handle things smoothly, and my sibling mainly plays with a 360 controller (PC version of Black Flag). It seems to work well.
I dislike using a controller. Others might enjoy it. I just rely on a controller for racing and sports games.
I've played Assassins Creed on both Xbox and PC, and both versions work well. The controller seems better, though climbing in AC games can feel awkward (like jumping off buildings when you need to climb). Most actions use just one button, so either option is fine. For titles like Black Flag and AC3, the mouse felt more comfortable because there were more boat controls. I didn't enjoy the controller movement.
It's not really possible to play a third-person game using just a keyboard and mouse. That setup works best for RTS and FPS games, but not for most MMORPGs.
I've tested it using both keyboard + mouse and a controller. The controller gave me a better feel. I used the Xbox 360 with DualShock 4 and everything worked well. Assassin's Creed Unity now supports DualShock 4 controllers natively, which is reassuring. I'm glad Syndicate follows suit—it's definitely a plus.
I used a controller for AC: Brotherhood, but changed to kb+m for Revelations. I favor using a mouse for camera control over thumbsticks.
