I notice several comments here that remind me of what I’m about to say. I wonder if this is the kind of reply I’m expecting, or if I’m misunderstanding or bringing up a minor point. My main question is why playing on a real ultra-wide monitor would be the same as using a 2560x1080 display. A 32-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio shows nearly the same size as a 34-inch one in 21:9, and a 27-inch model would likely match a 29-inch UW. I haven’t calculated that yet. After considering it more, it seems similar to Linus’s idea—play at 1920x1080 with black bars if the game doesn’t support ultra-wide. It might make sense to stick with 16:9 for a 21:9 display if you want better value. It looks like you could find a 2560x1440 32-inch monitor for around $450–500 and a 2560x1080 34-inch one at the same price.
A 31-inch 1440p display running at 2560x1080 would roughly match a 27-inch 2560x1080 screen.
