Play games without internet connection.
Experienced a multi-day disruption with power and internet services. Restoration was fast, but online access lagged, leaving me stuck on a paper book for days while unable to play my own games. Building a computer recently, I wasn’t prepared for such a gap in functionality. What options exist now? Are there recommended offline game collections or alternatives to Steam that work without constant connectivity?
Been there, have gone ithout home internet for years. Actually bought a portable SSD specifically to facilitate transfer of large game files I've downloaded at a friend's place. Game activation in Steam requires very little data, so a portable hotspot can often finish the job and allow access to Steam games, though there is another solution. GoG is what you're looking for. You can literally download just the standalone game excecutables (you don't need GoG Galaxy to download and/or play), and as the games lack DRM, they don't require an internet connection to play. I make it a habit to buy from GoG where possible. If there's a game offered on both Steam and GoG, the latter gets my first pick. No futzing about with the picky Offline Mode that Steam offers. The games just work. Downsides are that the selection of games isn't as rich as what Steam offers (not bad mind you, it's actually quite good, just Steam offers more), good sales are much harder to come by, and not all games offer equal support to both platforms.
Many classic titles available on GOG function without an internet connection. If the game is older than 30 days, similar experiences with Steam’s offline mode should occur (Steam typically needs to reconnect to the web every 30 days). Metro series generally work well in single-player mode as well.
It’s unlikely you can quickly identify the game on Steam. If it offers a single-player mode, you might be able to play without an internet connection. The most certain method within Steam is to switch to offline mode, disable internet access, and try playing.
It stands out among GoG titles with Stardew Valley. You enjoy the standalone experience while appreciating its visuals and relaxed pace—perfect when things feel a bit intense. Its lightweight performance means it runs smoothly even on older devices, and it won’t drain your battery quickly during power cuts. For emergency gaming, choosing easy-to-run games is key: they work anywhere and help preserve your energy.
