I've been curious about the resolution this community uses. I usually play at 3840x2160, and my 5700xt handles 60fps well for most games. Based on the report from digitaltrends.com, about 64% of Steam users play at 1920x1080. It seems the typical resolution is shifting toward 2560x1440 now. Any insights would be helpful.
It all comes down to what my laptop can manage, which varies a lot depending on the game—generally ranging from 4K up to around 768p.
I'm part of the group that struggles to distinguish between 1080 and 4K, so I stick to 1080p. Actually, I value the better frame rates more than the visual quality. EDIT: Once I start using VR, I'll want both.
1440 remains significantly pricier than 1080, which means I haven’t managed to save up for a new monitor yet. I’m planning to upgrade my GPU from 570 this summer, so I think I’ll buy a new one then.
I own a 4K display and must run games at 1080p since my graphics card can’t process 4K in any titles. The latest cards are expensive, so we’re looking for a new Radeon 580 at a reasonable price. I’m not able to spend $500 on what’s essentially a mid-range model like the 2060.
The RX 5700 represents a significant jump over the 7970, offering sharpening features that let you play games at around 75% of 4K resolution while maintaining a 4K appearance.
1080p 144hz offers a great balance of value and performance. Going beyond that adds extra expense without much standard benefit. Higher refresh rates remain uncommon. I aim for 1440p 144hz because it feels like the perfect choice, though it comes with a steep price compared to my current setup. It’s hard to justify the cost when you already have solid performance. No one should feel embarrassed or inferior for playing at 1080p 144hz—it’s the norm for most gamers, except those who can afford better options. Those below that resolution should strive to reach it if possible and affordable, but remember: enjoyment matters most. Always enjoy gaming; if it fades, consider it.
